The house
The second and largest of a small collection of fishermen’s cottages restored and reimagined on Mawella Beach near Tangalle. (The video referenced features the collection and a shared plot.)
The house sits a stone’s skim back from the beach at the far Western edge of the bay. It has been restored simply and smartly, using local materials and in a clean minimal style; all whites and creams and polished cement floors.
A main bedroom and a smaller twin/guest bedroom make up one side of the house; a kitchen and sitting room (with access to the main bedroom’s ensuite bathroom) along the other.
A simple outdoor dining ‘ambalama’ gives extra social space in the garden.

The beach
Mawella is a gem of a beach strip - a lovely wide bay with soft sand and comfortably swimmable sea. It’s perhaps not as manicured as some with an active fishing community using parts of the beach but, for many folks, that touch of real life adds to the appeal.
It also seems to have dodged any mass development. Properties like Taru Villas, and The Last House have set a precedent for high-end boutique hospitality on the beach. The recently-opened, and very lovely, Halcyon has added nicely to the roster.
Recent development at the Western end of the bay has seen the addition of a new breakwater to support the local fishing community. Only recently completed, that work is yet to bed down fully and there is some impact to the beach that will lessen over time.

Location
The extension of the Southern Expressway brings these cottages within a very manageable two-and-a-half hours drive of the International Airport, just north of Colombo. The closest town is Tangalle, around 15 minutes drive away.
While the area remains less developed than those further West and nearer Galle there is a growing tourist scene with smart hospitality to support it. The Amanwella hotel is a short drive away and, catering to a slightly different crowd, hotels and guesthouses are emerging in quick succession at the likes of Hiriketiya and Dickwella.
Rental opportunity
The cottage has, since completion, been rented as part of a set that has access to a communal dining and swimming pool area. It has attracted good rates and rented well through platforms such as i-escape. There would be opportunity to continue that rental model.
