The cottage
This cottage is one of three lovingly renovated from abandoned fishermen houses at the western end of Mawella Beach. The cottage is simple in design and materials used but completed in a really attractive, contemporary style. If Aman did fishing cottages, surely the look wouldn’t be too far off this? (The video referenced features the full collection including the shared space.)
A veranda wraps around two sides of the house, overlooking the private garden that in turn runs to the beach.
A comfortably sized double bedroom and large ensuite bathroom, with open-air shower, sit to the back of the cottage. A large living and dining space, as well as the kitchen, are at the front.

An additional small plot (6 perches) for parking is allocated slightly away from the cottage with access permitted alongside the second cottage offered for sale.
The beach
Mawella Beach is fast being recognised as one of the (perhaps less flashy) gems of Sri Lanka’s Southern Coast; a wide sandy bay with the ocean suitable for swimming year-round.
With much of the stretch already taken by well-sized plots the vibe is rather more genteel than on some other popular beaches. Smart boutique hotels and villas have already seen the attraction - see the likes of Taru Villas, The Last House and, most recently, the gorgeous Halcyon.
There has been recent development at the Western end of the bay with the addition of a new breakwater to support the local fishing community. That work is still in its slightly early raw stage and will need a year or so to fully ‘bed in’.

Location
The extension of the Southern Expressway brings these cottages within a very manageable two-and-a-half hours drive of the International Airport, just north of Colombo. The closest town is Tangalle, around 15 minutes drive.
While the area remains less developed than those further West and nearer Galle there is a growing tourist scene with smart hospitality to support it. The Amanwella hotel is a short drive away and, catering to a slightly different crowd, hotels and guesthouses are emerging in quick succession at the likes of Hiriketiya and Dickwella.
Rental opportunity
The cottage has, since completion, been rented as part of a set that have access to a communal dining and swimming pool area. It has attracted good rates and rented well through platforms such as i-escape. There would be opportunity to continue that rental model.
