Outline
A really unique, and beautifully conceived, hospitality concept on the increasingly sought-after Mawella Bay near Tangalle on Sri Lanka’s South Coast.
Mawella Bay Cottages comprises a set of three restored fishermen’s cottages - each within its own comfortable plot of land - and a central pool and ‘pool house’, the latter serving as central kitchen and dining space for guests.
All the built spaces share a clean, contemporary style. A look that’s very much in vogue, it somehow manages to celebrate - rather than try and hide - the modest origins of the cottages, but adds a barefoot chic that’s much in demand.
Location
Mawella Bay lies about 10 minutes drive west of Tangalle on the central Southern stretch of Sri Lanka’s coast. Though for many years a destination for a well-informed tourist set it is ever-more on the wider-market radar.
The Southern Expressway now extends to, and well beyond, Tangalle meaning Mawella is reachable in not much more than two hours from central Colombo. It’s of course well placed for visitors navigating the reverse route around Sri Lanka - coming from Hill Country, south, perhaps via Yala, and then on to Galle, before heading north back to Colombo.
Mawella itself has an established pattern of large plots and boutique hotels/villas meaning it attracts a different crowd to beaches a little along the coast. The likes of The Last House, Taru Villas and the recently opened Halcyon Mawella add a boutique, rather up-market note.
Infrastructure
Currently the property has three main guest cottages, a central, communal, pool house and swimming pool, and two additional smaller staff cottages.
Two of the cottages have one double bedroom but with ample sitting room space for extra beds. The largest of the cottages has two bedrooms with a shared bathroom.
Each cottage has its own neat kitchen and dining space, though the pool house provides ample dining space for groups. The pool, at 19 metres, is more than large enough for a full house.
Commercial
The property has evolved over time, with the owners gradually extending and renovating to complete it in current form. It has proved a popular destination with a strong returning guest list paying between $100 and $200 per night for the cottages (according to season).
The likes of i-escape, selective in the properties they list, have embraced it, and regularly send guests.
There is, of course, scope to significantly increase the number of keys, either adding to the existing split-plot structure or re-conceiving the concept entirely, across the nearly two acres.
